Practice Guidance

Students are given help in how to organize and maximize their practice time to gain the most benefits. Students have specific goals for practice, which reduces the uncertainty about what to do between lessons and promotes progress. They are encouraged to come to lessons with specific questions and feedback on difficulties. The ultimate goal is to develop students who learn independence in managing their practice and can work efficiently for the desired results.

Regular practice is far more effective than an extreme effort just prior to a lesson. It is helpful to establish a regular daily practice time that works with your schedule, 5-7 days a week. The length of practice will vary according to the level and age of the student. Very young students will benefit from close supervision for a length of time appropriate for their attention span. Early intermediate students should practice a minimum of 30 minutes daily. Middle and late intermediate students should practice a minimum of 30-60 minutes daily.
